| Customer Reviews: This thermometer is too slow June 15, 2010 Gerald S. Pearson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I cook competition BBQ contests and have a need for near instant and accurate temperature readings. While I have no problem with the accuracy of this product, it takes WAY to long to settle in on a final temperature reading. I have had it take as long as 30 seconds before it finally locks in on a final reading. I am often testing my product while it is still on the smoker and every second the smoker is open heat that is escaping, so 30 seconds to entirely too long. Unfortunately I disposed of the original packaging before I discovered how slow this this thermometer responds, so I am unable to return it. My guess is that it will make it's way to a kitchen drawer and be used once a year to take a reading on the Thanksgiving turkey. I wish I had listened to the advice of my fellow BBQ competitors and purchased the Splash Proof Thermapen instead of trying to save a couple of bucks.
The Last Thermometer You'll EVER Need!!! June 1, 2010 Lake Stevens Mama (Seattle, WA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was at my wits end with meat that was underdone, or worse, overdone. After browsing several meat thermometers online, I settled on the PT-100 by Maverick. It was a professional grade thermometer, and I thought, "Heck-can't get any better than commercial."
Four days after I placed my order, my thermometer arrived. Neatly packaged, I was pleasantly surprised at how neat and concise the directions were-I hate long, drawn-out instruction booklets!
I was a little skeptical when I pulled out my thermometer... How could this little guy really help me cook a better pot roast? It didn't feel substantial-just like another kitchen gadget.
Just to put my mind at ease before I trusted my chicken to it, I tested it on a number of items around my house. A cup of lukewarm water, a chilled piece of cantaloupe. (I even put this thermometer in my own mouth. Ewww... I know) My home mercury thermometer confirmed the accuracy of each of these tests.
After knocking it accidently off the counter onto my slate floor and trusting that it had to be broken, I was shocked to see no visual damage, and revisiting these earlier tests showed that it was working just as well as right out of the package! (I later revisited the Amazon page and saw it's listed as "shockproof")
Now on to my chicken. I placed the probe into the meatiest portion of one breast on my grill, careful to avoid touching the grill itself. It quickly registered 159 degrees. Just shy of the 165 needed. After a few more minutes, I tested it again, and saw that the chicken had reached the suggested 165 on the thermometer. (Did I mention there is a handy meat guide written right there on the body of the thermometer? How handy and helpful is that?!)
The true test was when I brought the chicken inside and carved into the first piece. Perfection! It was tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked. No tough, overcooked chicken here! No pink, raw meat to trudge back outside to the grill. Hallelujah!
My husband proclaimed it to be the best chicken I ever made. I am so excited by my new-found "confidence booster", I may just break down and cook that prime rib I've always been afraid to attempt, afraid to ruin the pricey cut of meat.
A fantastic find, and well-worth the money spent... it's pricey, but it is absolutely the last thermometer you will EVER need!
I will definitely recommend this product to others.
Great performing thermometer May 26, 2010 Rick S (Laguna Beach, CA USA) I've been using this item for a few months now and it has been a fast and reliable thermometer with a sturdy feel. I like the sturdiness of the feel, I use it outdoors frequently when grilling and I have dropped it before (fortunately without any damage). One nice advantage over a competing thermometer in a similar class is the backlit screen. Even in low light or at night when grilling I can still read the thermometer, a very handy feature. All in all, very happy with the Maverick thermometer.
love it! May 18, 2010 Reenie Van Buren (Bradley Beach, NJ USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I own a small cafe and use the ProTemp every day. It is a great piece and I would never use any other thermometer. It is very fast giving temperatures in about three seconds and very accurate. I love the large display and that it is sturdy and does not break if you drop it. I use it for foods and liquids with the ability to check different things very quickly. I just purchased my second unit for one of my other employees. Five stars!
Rip Off March 31, 2010 Jaturi (Washington) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
This product is a Chinese rip off, in form only, of the ThermoPen which is hand assembled in England. I just returned the second replacement of this totally inaccurate and irreproducible thermometer to Maverick Industries. Don't waste your time and money on this terrible product. As soon as I finish this review I am going to buy the splash resistant ThermoPen from ThermoWorks. I just wish I hadn't wasted almost three months testing and returning the PT-100.
