Album Description
Deluxe 71 disc (70 CDs + DVD) box set that contains 52 single CD and double CD albums (which includes the previously unreleased full-length audio version of his 1970 Isle Of Wight performance) plus a bonus DVD: Miles Davis Quintet Live In Europe '67. Here are two separate European concert performances by the groundbreaking 'second great quintet,' filmed in Stockholm and Karlsruhe, Germany, October and November 1967, respectively. This DVD represents the only video of this Miles Davis Quintet lineup ever to be officially commercially released. Along with the discs comes a generous 250-page book whose centerpiece is an 11,000 word biographical essay by Fr,d,ric Goaty, the most in-depth liner notes ever included in any Miles Davis package. The essay is complemented by brief annotations written by Franck Bergerot, covering every single one of the 52 albums and the DVD. The cornerstones of the box set are the studio and live albums that were released during his tenure at the label, more than 40 titles that he recorded in the 1950s, '60s, '70s and '80s.

5 out of 5 stars De Rigueur for Miles Fans -- and Jazz-Buff Wannabes   August 23, 2010

A late Christmas gift for my spouse, who, I believe, knows every note of every musician's solo on every tune on every previously released Miles recording. The collection contains the well-known Columbia recordings plus versions not previously released of many Miles standards and other pieces. I can barely tolerate some of it, but the quality of the musicianship exhibited by all involved is unmistakable and often breathtaking. The collection is kept in the car and listened to often and long--whenever the music on the Real Jazz channel is not up to snuff. There's history in this collection. One can read some of it in the accompanying literature. (You may need a magnifier if you are contemporary with the music.) But it's a thrill to hear the music and history together from someone who actually was there for many live performances. The collection is well worth the price, even if you have the 33rpm original records in your treasure trove.

This is great, I recommend this to any Miles fan, (or non-fan, also!)..
The box is really nice, the cd packaging looks great, and the best part is the book with extensive liner notes about each album, and about Miles' in general..

I'm really happy with it, especially because I was looking for all the albums for a long time, and I could never really find everything..

Great box!

The Complete Columbia Album Collection, purchased through Amazon, is a 9 1/4 inch long box of 70 discs of Miles Davis. As a musician and fan of Miles it's a listening dream come true. There is also a DVD "Live In Europe - '67" (previously unreleased), and a history book of Miles and his bands plus a list of the albums in the collection, containing: track listings, discography and comments. This is years of listening and studying to take it all in. The collection is packaged in one box with a well designed cover, so you can have it sitting out, easy to get to.

The New York magazine of November 2009 had an excellent article on the collection (by Fred Kaplan), which is where my wife picked up on the idea of giving it to me for a birthday gift.

I had to send this box set back to Amazon on no less than four separate occasions. The casing was cracked around the lid every time because the shrink wrap was too tight, and the package wasn't marked FRAGILE (as I requested). However, after finding someone in AUSTRALIA who made it available via amazon.co.uk, I got what I wanted.

For the price, it's an unsurpassable collection. The fact that all discs are in ORIGINAL replica covers is cool-- consult the notes in the book and you find all the details about the extra tracks.

The book contains all of the session info, with some words on the album's creation. If you have good eyesight, you should be able to read ALL of the liner notes on the backs of the replica covers.

The sound quality varies from album to album and this is because (I think) some have been remastered over the years, and others haven't. It doesn't matter because each LP is of a piece in its entirety and all sound more than fine.

As for the music... there's not many words I can use to describe the dangerous beauty of the work of Miles Davis. We can only imagine what it was like to hear these when they came out, the barriers breaking down and so on... This box helps put you there.
