Lorex LW2002W - Very Good, but not perfect. August 30, 2010 Bruce Pros:
Good picture quality.
Good audio quality.
Good build quality.
Good wireless range.
No interference or static.
Highly sensitive (VOX) Voice On switch (in non-power saving mode only).
Can connect to external TV.
Charger cradle is very convenient, no need to plug & unplug the charger.
The kick stand and belt clip are awesome features.
Cons:
Poor VOX sensitivity in power saving mode (LCD turns off to save power).
The Battery life is ~1 to 1.5 hrs. in non-power saving mode.
A battery level indicator is needed.
Should use replaceable AA rechargeable batteries, or longer lasting Lithium Ion.
Lacks a talk back feature (from monitor to camera).
Comments:
Used as a baby monitor. Besides the Cons, I love the monitor, it works perfectly as advertised.
Remote light is unnecessary.
Alarm is unnecessary.
The battery life could be prolonged significantly if the VOX worked properly in power saving mode. In power saving mode it takes a loud sound to activate the VOX, and is therefore unusable. I was able to mitigate the battery life issue by placing battery chargers at strategic locations around the house. One in the master bedroom, one in the living room, and of course the cradle charger in the kitchen. I had saved these chargers (power supplies) from old cordless phones we discarded over the years. The proper fitting jacks are available at Radio Shack, just be sure the charger voltage and jack polarity are correct (sorry, a little soldering is required).
Mom of two and I love it!!! August 30, 2010 Sublime I have had this unit about a month now and so far have not seen anything wrong with it. I was a little hesitant to purchase due to the neg comments concerning the noise control. I have not had a prob with the units sound not activating. It comes on when my daughter sucks her pacifier. So with that said I think it's pretty sensitive. FYI, there is a sensitivity setting on the camera so you can control when the sound activates. (I'm assuming the others didn't have the setting correct on that.) I plugged it into my 40" LED TV and it looked pretty good. Not a single complaint! It does exactly what I need it to do! The signal is great! I have the camera upstairs and I am able to take it all around our 1700 sq ft. townhome without interference. Plus we can take it outside and almost walk around the building without interference... there are 6 townhomes/building if that helps!!! Good luck with your decision, I know I personally really like this unit!
OK system, but not as primary baby monitor August 26, 2010 L Von Steiner (Indianoplace, IN) After 10months with this system and an extra camera, here are my comments.
PROS:
+ The picture and sound quality is pretty good
+ The range is OK within a medium-sized house - signal is strong until it breaks altogether
+ No interference with wifi (and I have a lot of it)
+ Multi-voltage power supplies so we could use them on our travels overseas without worrying about voltage adaptors
+ Hooks up to TV/ video very nicely - I connected it to a video capture card and piped the video through my home security system which worked really well.
+ Night vision is pretty good for the range of the camera
CONS:
- Menu design is retarded - meaningless options and no way to tell what's selected
- the light has an on/ off switch that does nothing (it's always on).
- Sound circuitry must have a threshold to trigger it as it turns off to save power. This is not a problem if it kicks in reliably - but it DOESN'T. We have heard our babies crying through the wall and the monitor is silent for ages, until it finally wakes up.
- Camera angle of view is very narrow. I had to build a pole to put it on so that I could see the whole crib from above. Now the twins are in separate cribs, the camera is across the room in the opposite ceiling corner. Nowhere left to go when they start getting out of their beds.
- the night vision uses a circle of red LEDS (infrared?) to illuminate the room for its night vision - they're pretty unobtrusive, but there's a back lit button on top that's really bright and won't turn off (see light switch comment above).
Overall, the technology exists to make this an awesome product. However, they seem to have taken shortcuts to cut production costs that greatly compromise this.
If you're looking for looking to pair this with a DECT monitor that has reliable sound and use this to visually make sure your baby isn't in trouble, it's fine, if a bit expensive. If you're wanting just one unit, though, you should get a reliable audio monitor instead.
Elder Care monitoring - GREAT range !! August 19, 2010 J. Balchin (PA USA) I'm one of those "baby boomers" caring for an elderly parent now...my baby monitoring days are over. Finding a good system that will work when the parent is in a different house isn't easy. Mom lives in the house right next door to us....about 35 feet away. Still, most baby monitors won't work if the "range" is obstructed. I talked to ADT security which has wonderful systems...if you want to spend several thousand dollars. I tried another baby monitor which didn't work....so started looking into larger systems from Lorex. I had it narrowed down to two, each with 4 wireless cameras and DVR/Internet box, etc. Then this portable monitor caught my eye. After reading the reviews I was certain it wouldn't work. But I decided that returning things to Amazon.com is so easy I had nothing to lose. I'm so glad I decided to try it !!! I'm thrilled with it !!! The camera portion is now sitting in Mom's living room..about 45 feet from the front of our home. The monitor is next to me....in my bedroom which is on the second floor of our home. Mom's house is a double....the "other side" is empty and is the side that is between Mom and our home !! So we're most definately NOT unobstructed !!! I have a dual network router in our home as well as two cordless phone systems. As I walk through the house holding the monitor, I WILL lose the signal on occasion...or get "low signal" message. But I'm amazed that it doesn't happen in many areas of my home. I'm going to take the camera I have and try it in two other places in Mom's house. If it works in those areas as well, I'll be ordering two more cameras. So don't always trust negative reviews !!! If you like the product and are at all curious...TRY IT !!! Amazon makes returns painless....printable shipping labels, postal service pickup.....very easy. As for this baby monitor...I'll be sleeping so much better tonight knowing I can check on my Mother at 2:00 in the morning if I feel the need. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is the sound, which is "tinny" but has great volume. The picture is great, considering the distance between camera and monitor. It upgrades to 4 cameras and has a built in alarm.
We really like this monitor August 19, 2010 rka74ca so, the only problem we have had with this monitor is if it is not attached to the base, the battery seems to die relatively quickly- definitely needs to be attached at night, or it might die in the middle of the night and you would never know it since it doesn't beep or otherwise let you know before it turns itself off - as long as it's attached to the base, it's been fine. Also when traveling we had problems in one house with being too far from the base with low signal at certain angles but after playing around with it we were able to get it to work, and everywhere else we've been it's been fine (even upstairs, etc.). We have not had a problem with only hearing noises above a certain volume as others have complained about- it turns on with very quiet noises, not just loud crying, and I don't think anyone can stay awake to listen to breathing sounds all night (as a pediatrician, I really think it would alert you to any noise that might signal a concern.) It has no interference, and you don't have to worry about privacy and seeing into other babies cribs at night! Overall, we've been very happy.
